That's the 59-year-old triathlete Vidmantas Urbonas, whose list of achievements is filled with even greater challenges. The world champion and five-time world vice-champion talked about his plans, his approach to life and shared tips on how to stay healthy and full of energy.

Unconventional training areas and ionised alkaline water

Although nowadays people who do sports usually choose modern sports clubs, Vidmantas Urbonas has a different opinion. The best places for sport are the most natural ones, he says. He prefers the Nevėžis River for swimming and parks and forests for jogging or walking. Urbonas is preparing for next year's challenge, when he will swim across Lake Tiliotis in Nepal at an altitude of five kilometres.

"I try not to put myself in some kind of sporting box. I just get up and I feel like I want to exercise today, then I go outside, jog, swim. Now, when I am preparing, I try to swim in the open water, to get my body used to lower temperatures, because the temperature in Nepal will be around 2 degrees", said the well-known athlete.

Urbonas, who will soon celebrate his sixtieth birthday, says his day is unimaginable without ionised alkaline water.

"My family and I have been making water with a water ioniser for a few years now, because it is softer, more oxygenated and, above all, has antioxidant properties," says the triathlete.
The swim will complete the Water is Life project, which has been running for several years. The aim is to swim across the highest freshwater bodies on every continent in the world. Since the start of the campaign, the athlete has already swum across Lake Titicaca, Lake Jeloustoun, Lake Tana, Lake Grande, the Four Cantons and the world's largest freshwater body - Lake Baikal. It was a special challenge that took 17 hours to complete.

"Compared to the others, Baikal was a bit more challenging. The water temperature is 4 degrees, the distance is 57 kilometres, but you can still see the other shore, the Siberian cliffs are big. Many people ask how do you manage to cross such lakes? I "cross" these lakes before I swim. Before I jump into the water, I swim over each lake a million times in my mind. In my mind, I see how I stand on the shore, how I swim and how I finally get out on the other shore", - said Urbonas about what helps to overcome the biggest challenges.

The most important thing is to listen to your body

Urbonas advises that the best advice for maintaining wellbeing in old age is to feel and do what you yourself find pleasurable and joyful.

"In the past, I used to try to fool myself too. I used to put my trainers by the bed in the evening, my T-shirt, so that when I woke up I would immediately run to do something, but I realised that this is not the driving force. You have to go out into nature, listen to nature, it helps a lot with sports," says Urbonas.

The athlete advises against chasing dietary trends, as what is healthy today could be the biggest enemy of the body tomorrow. However, one thing is very important, according to the triathlete. It is the sufficient and correct consumption of water.

"I have been drinking ionised alkaline water regularly for a long time. Maybe it's what helps me achieve my goals. Water is very important to us, because we are largely made of water. The aim of my project is to draw attention to the way we live and to show that it is very important to keep our nature and water bodies clean," said Urbonas.

According to the triathlete, years are just numbers, because we make them up. "Don't pay attention to the year, exercise, move, read books, write books, live life, have goals and follow them", Urbonas advised.
